Hongqi is one of the oldest and most prestigious Chinese car brands, founded in 1958. It belongs to the state-run FAW group and for decades served as the car of China's leaders and ceremonial motorcades — which is why it is compared with European ultra-luxury names. In recent years Hongqi has shifted toward electrification and started expanding in Europe. Below — what kind of brand this is, which models are relevant, what to realistically expect in Lithuania, and how to acquire such a car.
If you are interested in Chinese cars more broadly, it is useful to also look at the overview of Chinese cars in Lithuania (BYD, MG and others).

Hongqi: what kind of brand is it?
Hongqi (Chinese 红旗, the Red Flag) is a luxury brand owned by one of the largest Chinese state-run car groups — FAW (First Automobile Works). The brand was founded in 1958 and for a long time produced representative cars for China's heads of state and official motorcades.
Because of this status, Hongqi holds an exceptional symbolic significance in China — it is a mark of national prestige that foreign media often call the Chinese equivalent of Rolls-Royce. In recent years the brand has transformed from a purely ceremonial maker into a modern luxury car producer that places strong emphasis on electrification.
Globally, the Hongqi model range is broader than the one relevant to Europe: it includes petrol H series sedans and limousines (H5, H6, H9), HS series SUVs (HS3, HS5) and ultra-luxury L series limousines (L5). However, these models have no official route into Lithuania, so for now they are not a practical choice for buyers here — in Europe the brand is led by electric models.
Hongqi expansion in Europe
Hongqi is entering Europe with purpose. The brand has set up a European headquarters in Amsterdam and already has operating distribution in several countries: Norway (through Motor Gruppen), the Netherlands (through Stern / Hedin Mobility Group) and Poland (through the Asian Automotive Distribution Center).
At the 2025 IAA Mobility show in Munich, Hongqi announced broad plans for Europe: to launch 15 new electric and hybrid models by 2028, expand to around 25 countries and reach about 200 sales points across the continent. This is an ambitious aim, showing that the brand treats Europe as a strategic market rather than a one-off experiment.
It is important to understand the context: these figures are plans, not the current reality. In most European countries, including Lithuania, the brand's network is still forming, so Hongqi should be seen as a rising but still young player in the European market.
Hongqi in Lithuania — the situation in 2026
As of mid-2026 there is no official Hongqi representative or importer in Lithuania. This means there is also no official showroom or factory service network of the kind we are used to when choosing more widespread brands.
Despite this, individual Hongqi cars do reach Lithuania through private import. For example, the Hongqi E-HS9 has already been listed on the Autoplius.lt platform, and some Lithuanian suppliers keep Hongqi spare parts in stock. So the brand is already physically appearing in Lithuania — just not yet through an official channel.
What this means for a buyer in practice:
- Service and parts — since there is no official network, the question of service and parts needs to be clarified in advance. Some parts are already available in Lithuania, but if you are planning long-term use, it is worth assessing where and how the car will be serviced.
- Acquisition — the car is usually brought in individually, so it is important to check the specification, documents and compliance with EU requirements before buying.
- Value retention — since the brand is still little known in Lithuania, resale value is harder to assess than for more widespread brands.
If you are considering buying a Hongqi, at this stage it pays most to work with a broker who will select, inspect and legally import the car — more on that below.
Hongqi models relevant to Europe
In Europe, Hongqi is built around electric models. Two that are worth knowing first:
Hongqi E-HS9 — full-size luxury electric SUV
The E-HS9 is Hongqi's established model in Europe and the brand's calling card. It is a large, representative seven-seater (2+3+2 layout) electric SUV with an expressive, luxurious appearance.
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Class | Full-size luxury electric SUV |
| Seats | 7 (2+3+2 layout) |
| Length | about 5.2 m |
| Drivetrain | Dual motor, all-wheel drive (AWD) |
| Battery | depends on version (several capacities offered) |
| Power | high, depends on version |
The E-HS9 is positioned as a luxurious, spacious family or representative car. The exact battery, range and power figures depend on the specific version, so when choosing it is important to look at the specific specification rather than general model claims.
Hongqi EHS5 — mid-size electric SUV
The EHS5 is a newer, more compact and more everyday electric SUV that Hongqi presented for Europe in 2025 (at IAA in Munich). It targets the broad family market and should be more accessible than the flagship E-HS9.
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Class | Mid-size electric SUV |
| Battery | about 85 kWh, LFP type |
| Architecture | 800 V (fast DC charging) |
| Range | manufacturer-stated about 550 km (WLTP, not yet homologated) |
| Drivetrain | front-wheel drive (2WD) in the launch version |
It is important to note that the EHS5 range figure is manufacturer-declared and, at the time of presentation, not yet officially homologated — so real range will need to be assessed against the final confirmed data and actual use (especially in winter). The 800 V architecture in theory allows fast charging, which is a plus for longer journeys.
When choosing between fully electric and other options, it is useful to also look at ordering a new car directly from the manufacturer — this is often the most competitive route to Chinese EVs.

Hongqi pros and cons
Since the brand is still new in Lithuania, it is worth looking at it soberly — with its real advantages and its real question marks.
Pros
- Luxury positioning at a potentially more competitive price — Hongqi considers itself a luxury brand, yet as a Chinese manufacturer it can often offer more favorable terms than traditional European luxury names. The exact price depends on the version and specification.
- Distinctive, representative appearance — the E-HS9 in particular looks solid and out of the ordinary, standing out on the road.
- Space and comfort — the E-HS9 is a genuine seven-seat full-size SUV, suitable for a larger family or for representation.
- Electric direction and modern technology — the newer EHS5 arrives with an 800 V architecture and an LFP battery, which are contemporary solutions.
- A strong group behind it — FAW is one of the largest Chinese car groups, so this is not a random startup.
Cons
- No official representative in Lithuania — this is the biggest practical drawback: service, parts and warranty have to be clarified individually.
- Low brand awareness in Lithuania — this can affect resale value and everyday convenience.
- Limited long-term experience in Europe — the brand is still young in Europe, so long-term reliability statistics are only starting to accumulate.
- Some data still uncertain — certain model figures (for example, for the EHS5) are still declared rather than finally homologated, so real parameters need to be confirmed against the specific unit.
Is it worth buying Hongqi in Lithuania?
Short answer: Hongqi can be an interesting choice for someone looking for an unusual, luxurious EV who is not afraid of working with a new brand — but only after assessing the service and parts question and buying through a reliable channel.
Worth considering if:
- You are looking for a standout, representative luxury electric SUV (especially the E-HS9).
- You value space and comfort for a larger family.
- You want something rarely seen on the road.
- You are ready to arrange service and parts logistics in advance.
Better to choose something else if:
- You want a wide official service network in every city — there is none in Lithuania today.
- A clearly predictable resale value is very important to you.
- You are choosing your first EV and want as few unknowns as possible — in that case more widespread brands will be more convenient.
For those whose priority is safety and simplicity, at this stage it may be more practical to start with more established Chinese EVs — we write about them in the Chinese cars overview.
