Why does Lithuania need its own reliability index?
Standard international car reliability rankings — Consumer Reports, J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study, TÜV Report — are calculated using US or German market data. Lithuanian conditions are fundamentally different:
- Winter road salt — Lithuanian roads are treated with 200-300 g of salt per square meter in winter, vs 80-150 g in Germany. This increases corrosion risk 2.5x.
- Cold starts — on average 70-90 days per year with starting temperatures below -5°C. This heavily stresses batteries, oil systems, and turbos.
- Fuel quality — Lithuanian OMV / Statoil / Lukoil gasoline sulfur content (10 ppm) meets EU norms, but bioalcohol additives (B7-B10) in diesel weaken older diesel engines faster than in the US.
- Mileage profile — the average Lithuanian driver covers 18,000 km/year (vs 15,000 km in Germany), of which ~40% on highways. This is a heavier load than international studies assume.
For these reasons, since 2024 WHEELSTREET has been collecting its own reliability data: every car sold is tracked for 12 months post-sale (warranty claims, partner service reports, owner feedback). In April 2026 we are publishing the aggregate for the first time — the WHEELSTREET Reliability Index 2026.
Methodology — how the index is calculated
The WHEELSTREET Reliability Index is a composite score on a 0-10 scale, made up of seven components:
| Component | Weight | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Engine reliability (5+ years) | 25% | WHEELSTREET warranty claims + partner service reports |
| Transmission reliability | 20% | WHEELSTREET diagnostic + repair history |
| Electronics stability | 15% | OBD-II error statistics on 2,400+ vehicles |
| Corrosion resistance (LT climate) | 15% | WHEELSTREET body inspection data |
| Spare parts availability | 10% | Lithuanian wholesaler catalogs + prices |
| Maintenance costs (€/year) | 10% | WHEELSTREET 2026 buyer survey (500+ responses) |
| Residual value (after 5 years) | 5% | Lithuanian secondary market price analysis |
Sample size (n): the index is only calculated for models WHEELSTREET has sold at least 20 units of during the 2024-2026 period. Models with smaller samples are marked as "preliminary index" or excluded from the main ranking.
Update frequency: every 3 months. Latest update — April 2026.
The full methodology is described in detail in the glossary entry: WHEELSTREET Reliability Index.

Why is the Toyota Corolla #1?
The Toyota Corolla E170 (2014-2019) outperformed every competitor on 3 critical parameters: engine reliability (the 1.6L 1ZR-FAE atmospheric — virtually trouble-free up to 250,000+ km), electronics stability (only 4 of 112 units tracked had electronic faults), and corrosion resistance (galvanized body + Toyota anti-corrosion coating).
Within 12 months of WHEELSTREET sale:
- ✅ 97.3% of Toyota Corolla buyers never used their MANGO warranty
- 🔧 Critical failures: 0 (engine major repairs — 0 cases out of 112)
- ⚠️ Minor faults: 8 cases (climate compressor — 3, lambda sensor — 2, other — 3)
Why the Lexus IS 250 #2?
The Lexus IS 250 XE20 (2007-2013) is the only premium-class car in the TOP 10. The 2GR-FSE V6 engine is one of the most reliable V6 gasoline engines ever produced. Even at 13-18 years old, average annual repair costs are just €220 — lower than most newer mid-market models.
WHEELSTREET note: The Lexus IS 250 is the best choice for those wanting a premium-brand car with reliability that doesn't cripple the budget. The only risk — a good specimen with full service history. WHEELSTREET inventory typically holds 2-4 units at any time.
Lowest index models — WHAT TO AVOID in 2026
Out of 2,400+ vehicles studied by WHEELSTREET, these models showed the highest operating costs or most frequent failures under Lithuanian conditions. WHEELSTREET typically does NOT add these models to inventory — or only takes them with detailed buyer warnings.
| Model (generation) | Index | Avg. repair/yr | Main issue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Range Rover Sport (L494, 2013-2018) | 4.5 | €3,200 | Air suspension, electronics, AdBlue |
| Audi A6 Allroad (C7, 3.0 TDI 2012-2018) | 4.6 | €2,100 | Air suspension, twin turbos, EGR |
| BMW 5 Series (F10, 535d 2010-2017) | 4.8 | €1,450 | 3.0 diesel rod bearings (~€40k repair) |
| Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W212, 2009-2016) | 5.2 | €1,300 | AdBlue system, electronics |
| Volvo XC90 (II, 2.0 D5 2015-2019) | 5.6 | €1,100 | Twin turbos, AdBlue |
The common problem with these models is a complex emissions system (EGR, AdBlue, twin turbos, DPF) plus luxury elements (air suspension, electronic shocks). Under Lithuanian conditions (cold, long urban driving) these systems fail much faster than in Western Europe.
WHEELSTREET recommendation: If you still want such a car — only buy with full service history and all critical components recently replaced (turbos, EGR, air suspension bags). A buyer receiving such a vehicle "clean" from a first owner with comprehensive service may be satisfied long-term — but the risk remains high.

Surprising findings in 2026 data
1. Hybrids are more reliable than pure gasoline cars
Across 1,200+ hybrids tracked, average annual repair costs were 22% lower than equivalent gasoline models. Reasons: regenerative braking reduces mechanical brake wear, electric assist reduces engine load on startup, fewer mechanical parts mean fewer failure points. 2. Korean cars have improved dramatically
Hyundai and Kia 2017+ models now make the top 20 most reliable (2010-2014 models would score below 6.0). Their 7-year / 150,000 km manufacturer warranty + improved manufacturing quality is paying off.
3. Older Lexus often more reliable than newer ones
The Lexus IS 250 (2007-2013) scores 9.2; but the Lexus IS 300h (2013-2018) only scores 8.4. Older atmospheric V6 gasoline engines tend to age better than newer 4-cylinder hybrid L4-FSE configurations. This matters for buyers seeking reliable premium cars on a limited budget.
4. German premium does not match its reputation under LT conditions
BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi 2010-2017 models cost on average 2.3x more in repairs than Toyota / Lexus from the same period. Premium reputation comes with a real cost — usually €1,200-2,400/year more.
5. Corrosion — a problem on 31% of used cars
WHEELSTREET 120-point inspection data shows that 31% of used cars in Lithuania (especially 8+ years old) have early corrosion in the lower wheel arches, sills, or shielding. Of these, ~12% require >€500 in repair. Winter road salt + irregular protection are the main causes.
How to use the WHEELSTREET Reliability Index when buying
Step 1 — pick a model by index
Use this article or the WHEELSTREET Reliability Index glossary page to filter models by your budget and needs. We recommend choosing models with index 7.5+ for daily use.
Step 2 — check the specific specimen
The index is a model statistical average. The condition of any individual car depends on owner maintenance and use. Use the VIN decoder to check the vehicle's history.
Step 3 — perform a technical inspection
Ideal — the WHEELSTREET 120-point inspection before purchase. If buying from a private seller or autoplius.lt listing, you can order an independent inspection (€120-180) — this pays off when buying a more expensive (>€15,000) car.
Step 4 — check warranty remainder before the deal
Newer models (2018+) may have remaining manufacturer warranty. Kia / Hyundai give a 7-year warranty — a 2020 model still has 1-2 years left.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the WHEELSTREET index differ from Consumer Reports / J.D. Power?
Three main reasons: (1) The WHEELSTREET index is calibrated for Lithuanian conditions — road salt, cold starts, fuel quality differences. (2) The sample size per model in Lithuania (we have 2,400+ vehicles in our database; Consumer Reports has a global sample but not LT-specific). (3) Our component weights are tuned for the practical buyer in Lithuania (greater weight on corrosion and maintenance costs than US rankings).
Can I find out the index for a model I want that isn't in the table?
Yes. Contact WHEELSTREET (phone +370 610 33377 or email) and specify the model generation + year. We will provide the index score, average repair costs, and typical failure scenarios from our database.
Is the index applicable to newer models (post-2023)?
Partial data. The very newest models (2024-2025) don't yet have a sufficient sample for a reliable index score. In such cases we provide a preliminary score using carryover model data and clearly note: "Preliminary index — limited data."
How often is the index updated?
Main recalculation — every 3 months. Latest update — April 2026. Next — July 2026.
Is the index a marketing tool for WHEELSTREET?
No. The index reflects objective sales and service data. Out of 2,400+ vehicles studied, 8.5% were rejected due to excessive defects — that reflects our intake strictness, not subjective evaluation. Premium brands (BMW, Mercedes, Range Rover) scoring low clearly shows we don't idealize popular brand names.
Where can I see raw data?
Currently we publish the aggregate. The full database is a WHEELSTREET internal document. However, if you are an academic researcher, journalist, or industry analyst — get in touch, we may share more detailed statistics on specific cases.
