The Volkswagen Passat is one of Europe's most iconic family cars — a spacious estate with European build quality and VW Group engineering. In the used market the Passat is a consistent bestseller thanks to its wide engine range, DSG automatic gearbox and competitive running costs. But the Passat has well-known issues — particularly with DSG and some TDI engines.
Generations Overview
B7 (2010–2014)
One of the last PQ46 platform generations.
Price: 8,000–18,000 €
Strengths: Simpler technology than the B8, lower servicing costs.
Problems: DSG DQ200 juddering, 1.8/2.0 TSI oil consumption issues.
Recommended? Yes — with 2.0 TDI and manual or DSG6 (DQ250) gearbox.
B8 (2014–2023) ⭐ Best Buy
Updated MQB platform, improved engines, comprehensive ADAS systems.
Price: 13,000–38,000 €
Strengths:
- EA288 2.0 TDI — more reliable than the earlier EA189 (Dieselgate)
- 1.4/1.5 TSI petrol — good options
- Modern Active Info Display (digital instrument cluster)
- Gesture Control, 9.2" screen (Discover Pro)
- GTE version — PHEV (50 km electric range)
Problems: DSG DQ200 (7DCT) — juddering, fluid change every 60,000 km. 2.0 TDI EA288 — EGR and DPF maintenance. Early B8 (2014–2016) — minor electrical gremlins.
Recommended? Yes — with EA288 TDI or 1.5 TSI and DSG6 (DQ250).
B9 (2023–present)
New platform, PHEV standard, fully modernised.
Used price: Still rare in the used market.
Best Engines
Diesel (Recommended for Longer Journeys)
2.0 TDI 150 hp (EA288, B8, from 2014) — best diesel choice. Reliable, economical (5–6.5 l/100km). Not the Dieselgate series. Highly recommended.
2.0 TDI 190/200 hp (EA288, B8) — more powerful variant. Same engine family.
Avoid:
- 2.0 TDI EA189 (B7, pre-2014) — Dieselgate emissions manipulation. Many have had the software update applied, but avoid if possible
Petrol
1.5 TSI 150 hp (ACT, B8, from 2017) — best petrol option. ACT cylinder deactivation, efficient.
1.4 TSI 125/150 hp (EA211, B8) — good engine from 2014 onwards.
Avoid:
- 1.8 TSI (EA888 Gen1) — oil consumption
- 2.0 TSI (EA113) — older, higher wear
Known Passat Problems
1. DSG DQ200 (7-speed) Juddering
The DQ200 is a dry dual-clutch gearbox. At low speeds (reversing, manoeuvring) it can judder or jolt. This is a well-documented VW Group problem. Fix: TCU software update or clutch pack replacement (1,000–2,500 €). Test before purchase at low speeds: reverse, pull forward, test parking manoeuvres.
2. DPF and EGR (TDI)
Like all modern diesels — the DPF can block if driven mainly in city traffic. The Passat TDI needs periodic motorway driving for DPF regeneration. EGR valve cleaning or replacement: 150–400 €. Check with OBD diagnostics for DPF/EGR fault codes.
3. DSG DQ250 Fluid Change (6-speed)
The DSG DQ250 (6-speed, wet clutch) is more reliable than the DQ200, but requires fluid changes every 60,000 km. Many owners skip this — a mistake. Fluid change: 200–350 €.
4. Electrical Gremlins (B8)
Early B8 models (2014–2016) — minor electrical issues: window switch modules, rear camera, audio. OBD diagnostics are mandatory.
5. Suspension Bushings (B7)
B7 Passat front suspension lower bushings can wear after 100,000–150,000 km. Symptom: knocking from the front suspension. Full replacement set: 400–800 €.
What to Check Before Buying
- ✅ VIN history check — imported from Germany, Netherlands, Belgium
- ✅ Engine identification — EA288 or EA189? (Dieselgate check)
- ✅ DSG judder test — low speed, parking manoeuvres
- ✅ OBD diagnostics — engine, DSG, DPF/EGR fault codes
- ✅ DSG fluid change history — every 60,000 km
- ✅ Suspension (B7) — ball joints, bushings

Our Recommendation
Best buy in 2026: VW Passat B8 2.0 TDI EA288 or 1.5 TSI, 2016–2020, DSG with fluid change history, mileage 80,000–140,000 km, price 16,000–25,000 €.
Budget alternative: B7 2.0 TDI with manual gearbox or DQ250 DSG.
Avoid: EA189 TDI, DSG DQ200 without judder test, unresolved DPF issues.

FAQ
Is the VW Passat reliable?
The B8 with EA288 2.0 TDI (from 2015) is generally reliable. The 1.5 TSI (from 2017) is also solid. The B7 with EA189 TDI has the Dieselgate history — the software fix doesn't reduce mechanical reliability, but it's better to choose EA288 where possible. DSG fluid changes are the most common cause of transmission issues — always verify these were done.
DQ200 or DQ250 — which is better?
The DQ250 (6-speed wet clutch) is significantly more reliable than the DQ200 (7-speed dry clutch). If you can choose, pay the modest premium for a DQ250-equipped car. The DQ200 can work well if maintained, but requires more careful checking.
Passat or Skoda Superb?
The Skoda Superb is built on the same platform and is mechanically identical. It offers more interior space for a lower price. The Passat has slightly better styling and a more prestigious badge. For pure value — Superb. For brand perception — Passat.
