The Dacia Duster is a unique proposition in the car market — the cheapest new AWD SUV in Europe, offering genuine all-wheel drive capability at an accessible price. On the used market, the Duster is very popular thanks to its simple, reliable engine and low maintenance costs. This is a car that makes no pretence of luxury but does its job brilliantly.
Dacia Duster Generations

Gen I (2010–2017) — Budget Pick
Simple, reliable platform. Ideal for those who only care about functionality.
Price: €5,000–12,000
Pros:
- Simple and easy to maintain
- 4x4 AWD version — genuine mechanical all-wheel drive
- 1.5 dCi diesel — reliable, economical
- High ground clearance (205 mm) — good off-road
- Cheap spare parts
Problems: Interior made from cheap materials — wears quickly. 4x2 with automatic gearbox (Variomatic/CVT) — avoid! Early 1.5 dCi (before 2012) — manual idle tensioner issue.
Recommended? Yes — with manual gearbox and 1.5 dCi.
Gen II (2018–2024) — Best Choice
Modernised design, better interior, 1.3 TCe petrol engine.
Price: €11,000–22,000
Pros:
- 1.3 TCe petrol — a good, modernised engine
- 1.5 dCi Blue diesel — updated, lower emissions
- Better interior than Gen I
- Medianav infotainment — simpler, but works
- 4x4 version with Lock function (centre differential lock)
Problems: 1.3 TCe (Renault/Mercedes collaboration) — timing chain issues in some early models. Check before buying.
Recommended? Yes — with 1.5 dCi or later 1.3 TCe (2020+).
Gen III (2024–present)
Completely new platform, hybrid versions.
Used price: Still rare on the used market.
Best Engines
Diesel (RECOMMENDED for most buyers)
1.5 dCi 90/110 HP (Gen I and Gen II) — the best choice. Reliable, economical (5–6.5 l/100 km). The only requirement is timely DPF replacement (if equipped). Recommended.
1.5 dCi Blue 115 HP (Gen II, from 2018) — updated with lower emissions. Reliable.
Petrol
1.3 TCe 130/150 HP (Gen II, from 2018) — a good engine, but early ones (2018–2019) had timing chain problems. Later models (2020+) were improved. Check carefully.
1.6 SCe 115 HP — simple naturally aspirated engine. No problems, but higher fuel consumption.
Not recommended:
- Variomatic/CVT automatic gearbox (any engine) — higher failure rates
Duster-Specific Problems
1. 4x4 System (Gen I)
The Gen I Duster 4x4 system is simple and reliable, but the differential fluid needs changing every 60,000 km. Unchanged fluid leads to eventual differential failure. Check the fluid change history.
2. Corrosion (Gen I)
Older Dusters, especially those imported from Western European countries with salted roads, can have corrosion problems on sills and wheel arches. An underside inspection is mandatory.
3. 1.3 TCe Timing Chain (Gen II, early)
The Renault/Dacia 1.3 TCe engine (used from 2018) had timing chain stretch problems in early models. Symptom: rattling noise when starting a cold engine. Diagnose with OBD and listen to the cold engine. Improved version from 2020.
4. Interior (Gen I)
The Gen I Duster interior is made from very cheap plastic materials. Button covers, handles — can start falling apart. This is not a mechanical issue, but check that all buttons work.
What to Check When Buying?

- ✅ VIN check — imported from France, Romania, UK
- ✅ 4x4 differential fluid history — every 60,000 km
- ✅ Underside corrosion — sills, frame
- ✅ OBD diagnostics — engine, ABS codes
- ✅ 1.3 TCe timing chain — listen to the cold engine
